6 days Virunga Classic Safari
Our 6 days Virunga Classic Safari is simply a 6 days double gorilla trek and Mount Nyiragongo Hike within Virunga National Park. There is nothing as magical as meeting face-to-face with our close relatives in the East-Central African jungles but seeing two of their habituated families is breathtaking. Additionally, there is the golden opportunity of hiking to the World’s largest Lava Lake. For such a remarkable trip, all you need is to pack your bags and set out for an adventure of a lifetime with memorable experiences being your daily meal.
Virunga National Park harbors 8 habituated gorilla families of Rugendo, Lulengo, Nyakamwe, Munyanga, Humba, Kabirizi, Bageni and Mapuwa, two of which will be trekked during this package. This trip kick-starts and ends in Goma Town with a border crossing at Grande Barrier.
Day 1: Grande Barriere Border Crossing and transfer to Virunga National Park
We arrive at the popular Grande Barriere Border Crossing by 10:00 am and make sure that the entire check-in process is complete by 11:00 am. Our stop is specifically at the Virunga Tourism Office (within the Border crossing building) where two gorilla trekking permits as well as Nyiragongo climbing permits are issued. Later be transferred to the luxurious Mikeno Lodge at Rumangabo Park Headquarters. Having enjoyed lunch and relaxed enough go ahead to explore the nature trails at Rumangabo or undertake birding tours.
Day 2: Trekking the first Gorilla Family of Virunga Classic package
Have breakfast and leave for Bukima Ranger Post where you will meet park Rangers and other trekkers to be offered orientation before beginning the gorilla treks. A total of 1-3 hours of hiking is expected before the mountain gorillas are encountered but this also depends on the nature of hiking trails as well as the location of the Mountain gorillas. The reward of all this hard work is spending one hour with the gorillas then walking or being driven to Ngila Lodge where a delicious lunch will be enjoyed. The afternoon is for relaxing at the Lodge, bird watching, or touring the Bamboo project
Day 3: Trekking the second Gorilla family on the Virunga Classic package
Be treated to a quick delicious breakfast and by 7:00 am be at Bukima Ranger Post for briefing. Begin the second gorilla trek by 8:00 am and go through the same process as the previous day. On getting back to the Lodge, a delicious lunch will be served after freshening up to allow you to return to Mikeno Lodge. Here there is also a chance to explore Rumangabo nature trails or unwind at the Lodge.
Day 4: Spend the day at leisure (tour of Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage, Community visit, birding, or nature walks)
This day will be spent at leisure with options of touring the serene environment of swanky Mikeno Lodge, touring the outstanding Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage, stopping by one of the community projects (Widow’s Workshop), birding tours or simply unwinding with a tour of the nature trails.
Day 5: Depart for the Mount Nyiragongo Hike
After your breakfast at the luxurious Mikeno Lodge, your next stop is at the Kibati Ranger Post trailhead for Mount Nyiragongo hikes. On getting there, visitors are taken through the orientation process that lasts 30-45 minutes and hire porters before setting off on this expedition of a lifetime. This is followed by the actual hike that will last 4-6 hours to reach the summit marked by a 250-meter across Lava Lake on Mount Nyiragongo. The night views of this Lake are the most breathtaking, while dinner and overnight will be at the summit Camps.
Day 6: Transfer back to Goma, drop-off at Grande Barriere Border Crossing
Having rested well, be treated to an early breakfast to allow you to begin the descent to Kibati Ranger Post by 6:30 am. Only about four hours will be needed to get to the bottom of the Volcano and on arriving there, take a ride back to Goma Town. This marks the end of the Virunga Classic trip.
A detailed introduction to 6 days Virunga Classic Safari
6 days Virunga Classic Safari is best understood as more than a name on an itinerary. It is a practical way to experience Virunga National Park through gorilla trekking, supported by local guiding and enough time to notice a guided forest trek and a carefully managed encounter with habituated gorillas. The page above explains the central subject; this planning section adds the decisions that turn that information into a workable trip. Travellers should think about the season, the length of each transfer, the amount of activity they enjoy, the standard of accommodation they prefer and how much unstructured time they want. A good plan protects the quality of the experience without making the journey feel rigid. In D.R. Congo, conditions can change between regions even during the same journey, so a route should be checked as a complete sequence rather than as a list of separate attractions. Start with the experience that matters most, then build transport, rest and secondary visits around it. That approach keeps 6 days Virunga Classic Safari rewarding for first-time visitors, experienced safari travellers, couples, families and private groups with different interests. For independent protected-area and conservation context, consult Virunga National Park travel updates, UNESCO’s Bwindi overview, IUCN mountain gorilla conservation information and confirm operational details again near the travel date.
How to plan the timing and route
Timing for 6 days Virunga Classic Safari is not only a question of choosing a month. It also involves arrival time, road or flight connections, permit availability where controlled activities are included, and the realistic pace of each day. Dry periods can make some roads and trails easier, while greener months may bring dramatic skies, fresh vegetation and fewer visitors in certain areas. Rain can occur in any season, particularly around forests and highlands, so flexibility remains useful. A local planner should confirm current park rules and access before final payment because official conditions can change. Use the Congo safari collection to compare journeys in the same region, then review the complete safari collection if you may want to combine countries. Arriving a night before a major trek or long game-drive day is often more comfortable than connecting directly from an international flight. When the route covers several borders, build in sensible buffers and avoid treating every transfer as guaranteed to take the shortest possible time.
What the experience may feel like
The character of 6 days Virunga Classic Safari comes from a guided forest trek and a carefully managed encounter with habituated gorillas. Some moments are active and focused, while others are quiet: listening to a guide, waiting for wildlife to move, watching light change across the landscape or sharing a meal after a long day. A private journey makes it easier to adjust stops and explanations to the group, although protected-area rules, ranger instructions and safety limits always take priority. Guides read tracks, weather, vegetation, road conditions and animal behaviour, then explain what those clues mean without promising a sighting that nature cannot guarantee. Travellers get more from gorilla trekking when they ask questions and allow time for observation rather than concentrating only on photographs. The route may include early starts, uneven ground or extended drives, depending on the subject, but these can be balanced with breaks and well-placed nights. Browse the signature experiences to see how different activities can complement one another, especially when one person wants primates and another prefers landscapes, birds, culture or classic wildlife.
