Why Combine Rwanda Gorilla Trekking with Uganda Gorilla Habituation?

7 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Uganda Gorilla Habituation

Most travelers planning a gorilla safari choose either Rwanda or Uganda. However, combining the two countries creates an opportunity to experience two different gorilla encounters during the same trip.

Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is one of the world’s most famous mountain gorilla trekking destinations. Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, meanwhile, offers both standard gorilla trekking and the specialised Gorilla Habituation Experience. The main difference is the amount and nature of time spent with the gorillas.

During standard gorilla trekking, visitors normally have a limited viewing period once the gorilla family is located. The Uganda Gorilla Habituation Experience is designed around a much longer encounter, allowing visitors to spend up to four hours observing a gorilla family that is undergoing the habituation process. This makes the two experiences complementary rather than identical.

You can therefore begin your journey in Rwanda with a traditional gorilla trek and then cross into Uganda for a much more extended forest experience.

The biggest advantages of this itinerary include:

For travelers particularly interested in gorilla behavior, photography and conservation, this is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the mountain gorillas of the region.

Detailed 7-Day Rwanda and Uganda Gorilla Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your 7 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Uganda Gorilla Habituation safari begins in Kigali. Depending on your international flight arrival time, your Native Africa Tours guide will meet you at Kigali International Airport or your hotel in Kigali. After a briefing about your safari, you will begin the journey northwestern Rwanda toward Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park.

The drive takes you through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside, characterized by rolling hills, cultivated farmland and small communities. Volcanoes National Park is located in northwestern Rwanda and forms part of the larger Virunga conservation landscape. Upon arrival in the Musanze area, you will check into your lodge and have the remainder of the day to relax. If your arrival time allows, you may also have the opportunity to explore the local area or visit a nearby cultural attraction.

Accommodation: Lodge in Musanze/Volcanoes National Park area
Meal plan: Dinner and breakfast
Driving: Approximately 2–3 hours depending on your starting point and traffic

Important

Your gorilla trekking permit should already be secured before this day. Gorilla trekking permits are date-specific, and your trekking date determines the rest of the itinerary.

Day 2: Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Today is the first major highlight of your safari: gorilla trekking in Rwanda. You will wake early and have breakfast before driving to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for registration and briefing.  The park authorities will allocate you to a gorilla family according to the day’s trekking arrangements.

After briefing, you will enter the forest with trained park guides and trackers. The duration of the trek varies considerably. Mountain gorillas are wild animals and move through their natural habitat, meaning there is no guaranteed walking time or distance. Some groups may be located relatively close to the trailhead, while others may require several hours of hiking through the mountainous terrain.

Once you locate your assigned gorilla family, you will have your permitted viewing time to observe them. This is the moment when the long journey becomes worthwhile. You may see silverbacks resting or displaying their strength, mothers caring for infants, juveniles playing among the vegetation and other members of the group feeding, climbing or moving through the forest. Your ranger guide will explain the behavior of the gorillas and help you understand the conservation work that protects these critically important animals. Photography is allowed subject to the park’s rules and instructions from your guides. After the gorilla encounter, you will trek back toward the park headquarters. Return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation.

Optional afternoon activity

Depending on your energy level and available time, you may visit a local community or cultural attraction around Musanze.

Accommodation: Lodge in Musanze/Volcanoes National Park area
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Rwanda gorilla trekking age requirement

Rwanda’s official gorilla booking portal currently lists the minimum age for mountain gorilla tracking as 15 years.

Day 3: Transfer from Volcanoes National Park to Rushaga, Uganda

After breakfast, you will leave Rwanda and begin your journey toward Uganda. Today is important because you will cross an international border and move from the Virunga region of Rwanda into southwestern Uganda.

The journey will take you toward the Cyanika border, one of the principal Rwanda-Uganda border crossings. After completing immigration and customs procedures, you will continue toward Kabale and then onward to Rushaga in the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as you approach southwestern Uganda. You will pass through mountainous landscapes, terraced farmland and rural communities before eventually reaching the Bwindi region. Rushaga is particularly important for travelers interested in gorilla habituation because the Gorilla Habituation Experience takes place in the Rushaga area of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Depending on your arrival time, you can check into your lodge and spend the evening relaxing. Your guide will also brief you about the following day’s habituation experience.

Accommodation: Lodge in Rushaga
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Uganda Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga

Today is the centerpiece of your 7 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Uganda Gorilla Habituation safari. You will wake very early and have breakfast before proceeding to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The Gorilla Habituation Experience is different from normal gorilla trekking. Instead of visiting a fully habituated family for a shorter viewing period, you participate in an experience involving a gorilla family that is undergoing the habituation process.

The experience provides an opportunity to spend up to four hours observing the gorillas once they have been located, compared with the shorter viewing period associated with standard gorilla tracking. The day begins with a briefing from the Uganda Wildlife Authority team. You then enter the ancient Bwindi forest accompanied by experienced trackers, rangers and guides. Tracking can be physically demanding.

The team follows signs such as footprints, feeding areas, nests, broken vegetation and other evidence to determine the location and direction of the gorilla family. Once the gorillas are located, the experience becomes much more immersive.

You may observe: Feeding behavior, social interactions, vocalizations, movement through the forest, infant and juvenile behavior, silverback behavior, grooming,  nesting behavior, how gorillas respond to members of their group, and the gradual process through which gorillas become accustomed to human observers. The four-hour period should not be interpreted as four continuous hours of walking with the gorillas. The experience involves tracking, waiting, walking and observing, and the gorillas determine how the encounter develops. They remain wild animals in their natural environment.

Your guides and trackers will explain how to behave around the gorillas and will ensure that the encounter follows conservation regulations. After the experience, return to the park headquarters and then travel back to your lodge. The remainder of the afternoon is reserved for relaxation.

Accommodation: Lodge in Rushaga
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Rushaga to Lake Bunyonyi

After two major gorilla experiences, today provides a slower pace. You will have breakfast at your lodge and begin your journey toward Lake Bunyonyi, one of southwestern Uganda’s most scenic destinations. The journey is relatively short compared with the longer cross-border drives and allows you to appreciate the landscapes around Kabale. Lake Bunyonyi is surrounded by steep green hills and numerous small islands.

Upon arrival, check into your lodge overlooking the lake. The afternoon can be spent relaxing by the water, enjoying the views or taking part in an optional boat excursion. A traditional canoe or motorboat trip allows you to explore some of the islands while learning about the history and communities around Lake Bunyonyi.

Accommodation: Lodge at Lake Bunyonyi
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: Lake Bunyonyi – Relaxation and Scenic Exploration

Today is intentionally flexible. After several days of trekking, border travel and long forest activities, a free day around Lake Bunyonyi gives you an opportunity to slow down. You can enjoy breakfast overlooking the lake before taking part in a morning boat trip or simply relaxing at the lodge. Lake Bunyonyi is also an excellent destination for birdwatching. The surrounding hills and wetlands provide habitat for numerous bird species. For travelers interested in photography, the lake’s islands, terraced hillsides and changing light create excellent opportunities for landscape photographs. Those interested in local culture can arrange a community experience.

Alternatively, you may choose to spend the entire day at the lodge. This flexibility is particularly useful after the physically demanding Gorilla Habituation Experience.

Accommodation: Lodge at Lake Bunyonyi
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7: Lake Bunyonyi to Kigali – Departure

Your final day begins with breakfast at the lodge. You will then begin your journey back toward Rwanda. The drive takes you toward the Rwanda-Uganda border and onward to Kigali. Depending on your international flight schedule, you may have time for a short Kigali city experience or a visit to one of the city’s attractions.

If your flight departs later in the evening, we can also arrange a city tour depending on your available time. Your guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport in time for your international departure. This marks the end of your 7-day Rwanda and Uganda gorilla safari.

Gorilla Permit Costs for Rwanda and Uganda

Permit prices are an important part of planning this safari. Rwanda’s official gorilla booking platform currently lists the standard foreigner gorilla tracking permit at US$1,500 per person. It also lists different rates for eligible foreign residents, Rwandan citizens and East African citizens.

Important permit advice

Do not plan your budget using an old blog post or outdated permit price. Gorilla permit tariffs can change, and different prices may apply depending on: Travel date, nationality, residency status, applicable tariff period, and type of gorilla experience. Native Africa Tours confirms the applicable permit cost and availability before requesting final payment. Gorilla permits are also limited, particularly for specialized experiences such as habituation, so early booking is strongly recommended.

What Is Included in This 7-Day Gorilla Safari?

A typical private package can include:

Note: The exact inclusions depend on the accommodation category and final quotation.

What Is Not Included?

Unless specifically stated in your quotation, the following are normally excluded:

What is the Best Time for This Rwanda and Uganda Gorilla Safari

Gorilla trekking can be done throughout the year. However, many travelers prefer the drier periods because hiking conditions can be more manageable. The commonly preferred periods are:

June to September: These months generally experience strong demand because they fall within a major East African travel season. Accommodation and permits should be booked well in advance.

December to February: Another popular period for travelers seeking relatively favorable trekking conditions.

March to May and October to November: These periods can experience more rainfall. However, the rainy season does not mean that gorilla trekking stops. Rain can occur at any time in the mountain forests, and the weather can change quickly. One advantage of traveling during wetter periods is that some lodges and safari services may offer more competitive rates. For a Gorilla Habituation Experience, your priority should be permit availability first, followed by accommodation and transport arrangements.

How Difficult Is Gorilla Trekking and Habituation?

7 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Uganda Gorilla Habituation

Both experiences require a reasonable level of physical fitness. Bwindi and Volcanoes are mountainous environments, and trekking may involve: steep slopes, muddy trails, dense vegetation, uneven ground, tree roots, wet conditions, long periods of walking, and high altitude in some areas. The exact difficulty cannot be predicted in advance.

Gorilla families move freely, and the location of the animals determines how long you may need to hike. Some visitors reach their gorilla family relatively quickly, while others may spend several hours tracking. For travelers concerned about mobility or fitness, it is important to discuss your situation with your safari operator before booking. Walking sticks and porters can also be helpful.

What to Pack for the Gorilla Trekking Experience

Packing correctly can make your gorilla experience much more comfortable. We recommend bringing:

Clothing

Footwear

Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip. The forest trails can become muddy and slippery, particularly after rainfall.

Protection

Bring:

Photography equipment

If photography is important to you, bring:

Avoid carrying unnecessary heavy equipment. During the habituation experience, you may spend many hours moving through difficult forest terrain.

Crossing from Rwanda into Uganda

One of the interesting aspects of this itinerary is that it is a genuine cross-border East African safari. The route from Rwanda’s Volcanoes region toward southwestern Uganda can be arranged through an appropriate Rwanda-Uganda border crossing, with Cyanika and Katuna/Gatuna being practical routes for journeys toward Kabale and southern Bwindi depending on the itinerary.

Border procedures require travelers to have the appropriate travel documents. Visa and entry requirements depend on your nationality and the countries you are visiting. Travelers combining Rwanda and Uganda should check their applicable immigration requirements before the safari. An East African Tourist Visa may be relevant for eligible travelers, but requirements should always be confirmed according to your nationality and current immigration regulations.

Who Is This 7-Day Gorilla Safari Best For?

This itinerary is particularly suitable for travelers who want to make gorillas the main focus of their East African trip.

Gorilla enthusiasts: If seeing mountain gorillas is the primary reason for your trip, experiencing two different gorilla encounters makes this itinerary especially attractive.

Wildlife photographers: The extended habituation experience provides more time to observe gorilla behavior and prepare for photography.

Primate enthusiasts: The opportunity to compare a standard gorilla trek with a habituation experience provides a deeper understanding of gorilla conservation.

Couples: The combination of gorilla trekking, forest experiences and Lake Bunyonyi creates a balanced private safari.

Repeat safari travelers: Travelers who have already experienced conventional gorilla trekking may find the Uganda habituation experience particularly appealing.

Travelers arriving in Kigali: Starting and ending in Kigali makes this itinerary convenient for travelers flying into Rwanda and wanting to add Uganda without taking a separate domestic flight.

Why Stay in Rushaga for Gorilla Habituation?

Rushaga is one of the southern sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and is particularly associated with Uganda’s Gorilla Habituation Experience. Staying near Rushaga before the habituation experience has an important logistical advantage. You avoid a long early-morning transfer from another part of Bwindi. This means you can wake up early, have breakfast and reach the briefing point without adding unnecessary road travel before what is likely to be the most physically demanding day of your safari. Rushaga also works well for travelers coming from Rwanda. After crossing into Uganda, the itinerary naturally continues toward southern Bwindi before moving onward to Lake Bunyonyi.

Why Book This Safari from Kigali?

For travelers already visiting Rwanda, adding Uganda can be surprisingly convenient. Instead of flying from Rwanda to another destination, you can travel by road through the scenic southwestern region. A Rwanda-to-Uganda itinerary also allows you to experience two different tourism landscapes within one trip. You begin among the Virunga volcanoes in Rwanda, cross into Uganda and continue through the Kigezi highlands toward Bwindi and Lake Bunyonyi. This makes the journey part of the safari rather than simply transportation between two airports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I combine Rwanda gorilla trekking with Uganda Gorilla Habituation?

Yes.

This is one of the most unique ways to experience mountain gorillas in East Africa. You can trek a habituated gorilla family in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and then travel into Uganda for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga.

Can I do Gorilla Habituation from Kigali?

Yes.

Kigali is a practical starting point for a Uganda Gorilla Habituation safari. Travelers can cross from Rwanda into Uganda and continue toward Bwindi and Rushaga. The important point is that the habituation permit must be a Uganda Gorilla Habituation permit, even if your international arrival and departure are through Kigali.

How many hours do I spend with gorillas during habituation?

The Gorilla Habituation Experience allows visitors up to four hours with the gorilla family once it has been located. The four hours should not be understood as four hours of continuous walking. The experience includes tracking, waiting, observing and moving through the forest.

Is Gorilla Habituation harder than normal gorilla trekking?

It can be.

The longer experience means you may spend considerably more time walking and observing in the forest.  However, the actual difficulty depends largely on the location and movement of the gorilla family on your particular day.

Where does Gorilla Habituation take place?

The Gorilla Habituation Experience takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, particularly in the Rushaga area.

Can I do this itinerary in reverse?

Yes.

Depending on permit availability, you can start with Uganda Gorilla Habituation and then cross into Rwanda for standard gorilla trekking. However, the exact order should be based on permit availability and your international flight schedule.

Is seven days enough for Rwanda and Uganda gorilla trekking?

Yes.

Seven days provides enough time to combine the two gorilla experiences while also allowing time for border crossing, accommodation and relaxation around Lake Bunyonyi. However, travelers who want to add chimpanzee trekking, wildlife safaris or additional cultural activities should consider extending the trip to 9–12 days.

What happens if the gorillas are difficult to find?

Mountain gorillas move naturally through their habitat. Trackers work from signs left by the family and communicate with the field team to locate them. Your guide and trackers will make every effort to locate the assigned family, but wildlife sightings can never be treated in exactly the same way as a scheduled attraction.

Do I need a porter?

A porter is not mandatory, but many travelers find hiring one extremely helpful. Porters can carry your backpack and provide physical assistance on steep or muddy sections of the trail. Hiring a porter also directly supports local communities around the national parks.

Can I add chimpanzee trekking to this itinerary?

Yes.

If you have more time, this itinerary can be extended to include chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park, wildlife viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park or additional experiences around Bwindi. For travelers interested specifically in primates, extending the safari to include Kibale can turn this into a comprehensive Uganda and Rwanda primate safari.

Recommended Extensions

If seven days is not enough, Native Africa Tours can extend the itinerary.

9 Days Rwanda and Uganda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari

Add Kibale National Park for chimpanzee trekking before continuing toward Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi.
