New Chimpanzee Permit Price for Kibale National Park: Kibale National Park is a primate capital for chimpanzees in the park’s forested areas. The park is located in western Uganda in the Kabarole district. This park is under the management of the Uganda Wildlife Authority which is essential for conserving the wildlife and park.
What is a chimpanzee permit?
A chimpanzee permit is a legal document issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority to allow travelers to see the chimpanzee in the Kibale National Park. Travelers to get these documents are supposed to use reliable tour operators to get them from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Travelers also are supposed to consider the booking of the permit to ensure availability during the time of tracking. The booking must be made in a period of 2 to 6 months towards the tracking dates. In the Kibale National Park, there are over 56 chimpanzee trekking permits for travelers interested in tracking the chimpanzee in the morning and 36 permits for the travelers for those interested in the afternoon session.
What is the new chimpanzee permit price in Kibale National Park?
The new chimpanzee permits for the Kibale National Park were issued from 1st July 2024 to June 2026. The cost of these permits was increased by the Uganda Wildlife Authority from 200 USD to 250 USD for foreign nonresidents, 150 USD to 200 USD for foreign residents, and 150,000 UGX to 180,000 UGX for East African residents.
In the Kibale National Park, travelers can engage in the chimpanzee habituation. Chimpanzee habituation is the process by which the chimpanzees are trained to get used to the human presence and it usually takes 2 years for the chimpanzee to be habituated. In this park, travelers can engage in the activity where they will spend more time with the chimpanzee in the park. Travelers to see this chimpanzee are required to have booked the chimpanzee habituation permit.
Also, the chimpanzee habituation permit was increased in this park and the rates for the increase of the chimpanzee habituation permit from 250 USD to 300 USD for the foreign nonresidents, 200 USD to 250 USD for the foreign residents, and 200000 UGX to 250000 UGX for the east African residents. There are about 12 chimpanzee habituation permits that are available in the park where travelers can spend half a day with the chimpanzee.
Why was the chimpanzee trekking permit increased in Uganda?
Several factors led to the increase of the chimpanzee trekking permits in Uganda in the Kibale National Park. Some of these factors include;
Increased conservation efforts
Chimpanzees are one of the largest primates and endangered species in the world that need to be protected from extinction. In the work of conservation and tourism, the conservation efforts must be high to promote sustainable tourism practices. The biggest percentage of the permits are always put much on conservation efforts.
Community support
The Uganda Wildlife Authority usually has to allocate some permit fees to the community. This is a form of reducing the human-wildlife conflicts for the communities surrounding the park. This support is done through empowering the communities through the tourism industry. So as travelers purchase the chimpanzee permits there is support made to the local communities surrounding the park. The support of the community is done through the construction of schools, hospitals, roads, and funding of local community projects.
Increased and high demand for the chimpanzee permits
In the past, Uganda was predominantly known for gorilla trekking where the permits cost so highly. Now chimpanzee trekking has also made the country popular for travelers to come to Uganda to track the chimpanzee. To overcome the high demand for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, Uganda Wildlife decided to increase the permit fees.

While in the Kibale National Park for chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation, there are several other activities that travelers engage in during their Uganda safaris and they include;
Birding
Kibale National Park is home to several bird species that are situated around the park. In this park, there are over 350 bird species and some of these are endemic species in the park. The bird species in the Kibale National Park include the black bee-eater, yellow-rumped tinker bird, yellow spotted nictor, little greenbul, black-capped Apalis, collared apalis, purple-breasted sunbird, and many others.
Bigodi walk
The Bigodi walk takes you through the Bigodi community and Bigodi wetland. On this walk, travelers will encounter several wildlife like bird species, and small primates like vervet monkeys, L’hoests monkeys, and many others. In the community, travelers engage in activities like coffee roasting, banana brewing, local cuisine preparation, and many others.
Cycling
Cycling in the Kibale National Park is done around the communities surrounding the park and around the crater rims of the park. In this cycling, travelers encounter several small wildlife like monkeys, and birds, and also interact with the local communities.

How to access Kibale National Park?
Kibale National Park is accessed by both road and air transport. While road transport, the park can be accessed by travelers via the Kampala Fort Portal road which takes about 6 hours of the day. Also, the park can be accessed via the Kampala Masaka, Kamwenge road which takes about 6 to 7 hours to the park. Whereas using air transport, travelers are supposed to use the scheduled chartered flights from either Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to the Kasese Airstrip. Travelers are transported to the park which takes about 2 hours.
