5 Days Gorilla & Chimpanzee Habituation Safari

5 days Gorilla SafarisSafaris Tailor-made

A 5 Days Gorilla & Chimpanzee Habituation Safari brings together two of Uganda’s most immersive primate experiences in one journey. The safari takes you from the mountain forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to the chimpanzee-rich forests of Kibale National Park.

Instead of focusing only on conventional trekking, this itinerary is designed for travelers who want more time observing primates in their natural environment. You spend a full day participating in the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi and another dedicated to chimpanzee habituation in Kibale.

The result is a compact five-day safari combining mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, forest landscapes, and Uganda’s conservation experience.

5 Days Gorilla & Chimpanzee Habituation Safari at a Glance

Day Activity Overnight
Day 1 Entebbe/Kampala–Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Bwindi
Day 2 Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga Bwindi
Day 3 Bwindi–Kibale National Park Kibale
Day 4 Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale Kibale
Day 5 Kibale–Entebbe/Kampala

This itinerary can be adjusted depending on your arrival point, departure flight, and preferred accommodation level.

Day 1: Travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your safari begins with an early departure from Entebbe or Kampala toward southwestern Uganda.

The journey takes you through Uganda’s countryside before reaching the mountainous region surrounding Bwindi. As you approach the park, the landscape becomes increasingly green and hilly, offering a striking introduction to the environment where Uganda’s mountain gorillas live.

You arrive in the Rushaga area of Bwindi, check into your accommodation, and have time to relax.

Your guide will also brief you about the following day’s Gorilla Habituation Experience, including the forest conditions, appropriate clothing, and what to expect during the extended gorilla observation.

Overnight: Bwindi

Day 2: Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga

Today is dedicated to one of the most memorable parts of your 5 Days Gorilla & Chimpanzee Habituation Safari.

After an early breakfast, you head to the briefing point in Rushaga before entering Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience differs from ordinary gorilla trekking because participants can spend up to four hours observing a habituating gorilla family once the group has been located.

Rather than simply finding the gorillas, taking photographs and leaving shortly afterwards, you have considerably more time to watch their behavior.

You may see members of the family feeding, resting, climbing, moving through dense vegetation, or interacting with one another. The experience also gives you a closer understanding of the work involved in gradually habituating wild gorillas to the presence of humans.

After the forest experience, you return to your lodge for an evening of rest.

Overnight: Bwindi

Day 3: Bwindi to Kibale National Park

After breakfast, you leave Bwindi and begin the journey north toward Kibale National Park.

This is primarily a travel day, connecting Uganda’s mountain gorilla country with one of the country’s most important chimpanzee habitats.

The scenery changes considerably along the way as you leave the hills around Bwindi and travel toward the forests and crater landscapes of western Uganda.

After arriving in the Kibale area, you check into your lodge and prepare for the following day’s chimpanzee experience.

You can spend the evening relaxing or, depending on the timing of your arrival, enjoying the surroundings around your accommodation.

Overnight: Kibale

Day 4: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale

The second major primate experience begins early in the morning.

After breakfast, you enter Kibale Forest for the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience. Unlike a conventional chimpanzee trek, this activity is designed around spending extended time observing chimpanzees that are being habituated to human presence.

Chimpanzees are highly social and active animals, so the experience can involve a variety of behaviors. You may observe individuals feeding, calling, climbing through the canopy, moving between locations, or interacting with other members of their community.

Because the experience involves following and observing the animals for an extended period, it can be particularly rewarding for travelers interested in wildlife behavior, photography, and primate conservation.

Your ranger and tracking team will help you understand what is happening in the forest while ensuring that visitors follow the required guidelines around the chimpanzees.

After completing the experience, you return to your accommodation and enjoy your final evening in the Kibale area.

Overnight: Kibale

Day 5: Kibale to Entebbe or Kampala

After breakfast, you begin the journey back toward Kampala or Entebbe.

The drive takes you through the countryside of western Uganda before continuing toward the central region.

If you have an evening flight from Entebbe International Airport, the itinerary can be planned around your departure time. For travelers continuing with another Uganda safari, this day can also be used as a connection to another destination.

Your 5 Days Gorilla & Chimpanzee Habituation Safari ends in Entebbe or Kampala.

Why Combine Gorilla and Chimpanzee Habituation?

Combining the two experiences gives you the opportunity to observe Uganda’s great apes in two very different forest environments.

Mountain gorillas live in the high-altitude forests of Bwindi, while Kibale is renowned for its chimpanzee population and diverse primate species.

The two experiences also provide different perspectives on primate behavior. Gorillas tend to offer fascinating observations of family relationships and social interactions, while chimpanzees are particularly dynamic and can move quickly through both the forest floor and canopy.

For travelers with a strong interest in primates, combining both experiences can make the five-day journey much more rewarding than concentrating on only one species.

Who is this safari best for?

This itinerary is particularly suitable for:

  • Travelers passionate about African primates
  • Wildlife photographers
  • First-time visitors looking for a specialized Uganda safari
  • Travelers interested in animal behavior and conservation

  • Couples or private travelers looking for a focused five-day safari

It is also a good option for travelers who have limited time but want to experience two of Uganda’s major primate destinations.
