Your 21 Days Uganda Gorillas, Chimpanzees & Wildlife Safari Route

This is not simply a collection of Uganda’s famous destinations. The route deliberately moves through very different landscapes and ecosystems. Entebbe → Ngamba Island → Lake Mburo → Mgahinga → Bwindi → Queen Elizabeth → Kibale → Fort Portal → Semuliki → Murchison Falls → Kidepo Valley → Soroti → Jinja → Kampala/Entebbe.

The result is a journey that starts around Lake Victoria, moves through southern Uganda and the Albertine Rift, continues north to Murchison Falls and then reaches the remote Karamoja region before returning towards eastern Uganda. Because Kidepo is geographically remote, this is a considerably more ambitious itinerary than a conventional western Uganda circuit. The journey begins in Entebbe, with an excursion to Ngamba Island on Lake Victoria, before continuing through Lake Mburo, Mgahinga, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.

From Queen Elizabeth, the route continues north through Kibale Forest and Semuliki National Park before reaching Murchison Falls National Park and then extending into the remote wilderness of Kidepo Valley National Park. The final section travels through Soroti to Jinja, where the safari concludes with an experience around the Nile before the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe.

This route allows you to experience several of Uganda’s most distinctive landscapes in one journey—from mountain forests and gorilla habitats to open savannah, the Nile River, crater-lake country and the remote wilderness of northeastern Uganda. Why Choose a 21 Days Uganda Gorillas, Chimpanzees & Wildlife Safari?

The biggest advantage of this itinerary is depth. Many Uganda safaris concentrate on the country’s southwestern parks because that is where several of the most famous primate and wildlife experiences are located. This itinerary goes considerably further. After experiencing gorillas, chimpanzees and golden monkeys in the southwest, you travel north to Murchison Falls and then continue into Kidepo Valley, one of Uganda’s most remote and distinctive wilderness areas. The contrast is remarkable.

Bwindi is a steep, humid mountain rainforest. Kibale is a lush tropical forest famous for chimpanzees and other primates. Queen Elizabeth combines savannah, wetlands, lakes and the Kazinga Channel. Murchison Falls is dominated by the Nile and broad savannah landscapes. Kidepo feels different again, with expansive valleys, rugged mountains and a much more isolated wilderness atmosphere. Kidepo is a remote wilderness destination with large numbers of lions, buffaloes and elephants, as well as rich birdlife and cultural opportunities with the Karamojong and Ik communities. Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe and Safari Briefing

Your 21-day adventure begins in Entebbe, Uganda’s gateway for international visitors. Upon arrival, you are met by your Native Africa Tours representative and transferred to your accommodation. If your flight arrives early enough, the day can be used to begin exploring Entebbe, but the main purpose of the first day is to settle in after your international journey.

Your guide will brief you about the journey ahead, including the different activities, expected travel conditions, what to pack for forest trekking and how the safari will operate. This first night is intentionally relaxed. With twenty more days ahead, there is little benefit in rushing into a major activity immediately after a long international flight.

Day 2: Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

After breakfast, you travel across Lake Victoria to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. This is an important distinction within the itinerary: Ngamba Island is a chimpanzee sanctuary experience, while Kibale later in the safari provides chimpanzee tracking in a natural forest environment. Ngamba Island is home to rescued and orphaned chimpanzees under the care of the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust. The sanctuary currently states that it cares for 52 orphaned and rescued chimpanzees and offers both day trips and overnight experiences.

The boat journey across Lake Victoria becomes part of the experience. Once on the island, you learn about chimpanzee welfare, conservation, and the work involved in caring for animals that cannot simply be returned to the wild. The experience gives the safari an educational beginning before you encounter wild chimpanzees later in Kibale. After returning to Entebbe, you spend a second night preparing for the overland journey into southwestern Uganda.

Day 3: Entebbe to Lake Mburo National Park

After breakfast, you leave Entebbe and begin travelling southwest towards Lake Mburo National Park. The landscape gradually changes from the urban environment around Entebbe and Kampala to Uganda’s countryside, where you will see farms, banana plantations, cattle-keeping communities and smaller trading centres. A stop at the Equator crossing in Kayabwe provides an opportunity for photographs, shopping and a short break before continuing towards Lake Mburo.

Lake Mburo is particularly interesting because it introduces you to a different style of Ugandan safari. The park’s landscape is characterized by rolling grasslands, acacia woodland, wetlands and lakes. On arrival, you can undertake an afternoon or evening game drive depending on your arrival time. Zebra, impala, buffalo, eland, waterbuck and other wildlife are among the species you may encounter. Unlike a forest trek, the open environment allows you to cover considerably more ground in the safari vehicle.

Day 4: Lake Mburo Game Drive and Boat Cruise

Today gives you more time to explore Lake Mburo. An early morning game drive allows you to search for wildlife while temperatures are cooler and animals are often more active. Your guide can adjust the route according to conditions and recent wildlife activity.

Later, you return for breakfast and some relaxation before the afternoon boat cruise. The boat provides an entirely different perspective of Lake Mburo. Instead of viewing the landscape from a vehicle, you observe the shoreline from the water, where hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds may be seen. This combination of land and water experiences makes Lake Mburo a valuable early stop in the safari. It also breaks up the journey before you head deeper into southwestern Uganda.

Day 5: Lake Mburo to Mgahinga via Mbarara and Igongo Cultural Centre

Today you continue towards southwestern Uganda and the Virunga region. The route passes through Mbarara, where you stop at Igongo Cultural Centre for a cultural experience centred on the history and traditions of the Ankole region.

From there, the journey continues towards the Kigezi highlands. The scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as the flat and gently rolling landscapes give way to terraced hills, valleys and steep slopes. This is one of the most visually distinctive parts of Uganda, and the road journey itself becomes part of the experience. By evening, you reach the Mgahinga area and check into your lodge. The following morning will be dedicated to one of Uganda’s most unusual primates.

Day 6: Golden Monkey Trekking and Transfer to Bwindi

After an early breakfast, you head to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for golden monkey trekking. Golden monkeys are endemic to the Virunga region, and Mgahinga is their Ugandan habitat. The species has distinctive golden-orange colouring and lives in troops within the bamboo and forest environment of the Virunga Mountains. The trek takes you through the forest while your ranger guide explains the ecosystem and helps locate the troop.

Unlike gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking has its own character. The monkeys can be active and fast-moving, which means you may need to watch carefully as they move through vegetation and the forest canopy. After the activity, you return for lunch and then continue towards Bwindi. This creates a particularly strong primate sequence in the itinerary: Ngamba chimpanzees → golden monkeys → mountain gorillas → wild chimpanzees.

Day 7: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Cultural Experience

Today is one of the defining days of your 21 Days Uganda Gorillas, Chimpanzees & Wildlife Safari. After breakfast, you report to the designated gorilla trekking briefing point for registration and preparation before entering Bwindi. Uganda’s gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Gorilla treks can take approximately 2–7 hours, depending on the location and movement of the gorilla family, with a maximum of one hour of viewing for standard tracking.

The trek itself is part of the experience. Bwindi’s terrain can be steep, muddy, and densely vegetated, and the location of the gorilla family determines how long you will be walking. When you encounter the gorillas, the forest becomes the stage for one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife experiences. You may observe adults feeding, juveniles playing, mothers caring for young ones, and the dominant silverback maintaining watch over the group. After returning from the forest and having lunch, the itinerary continues with a Batwa cultural experience, where you can learn about traditional forest knowledge, music, dance, and aspects of Batwa heritage.

Day 8: Bwindi to Queen Elizabeth via Ishasha

After breakfast, you leave Bwindi and travel towards Queen Elizabeth National Park, using the Ishasha sector where road and park conditions permit. Ishasha is particularly famous for its tree-climbing lions. Seeing them is never guaranteed because wildlife moves freely, but the search itself provides an exciting game-viewing experience. As you continue through Queen Elizabeth National Park, the environment changes from Bwindi’s mountainous rainforest to open savannah.

Later, you reach the Kazinga Channel for a boat cruise. The channel is one of the most rewarding water-based wildlife experiences in Uganda. Hippos are common, while crocodiles, elephants and numerous waterbirds may be observed around the shoreline. This is an ambitious day, but it allows you to combine Ishasha wildlife and the Kazinga Channel without adding another night to the itinerary.

Day 9: Queen Elizabeth Game Drive and Transfer to Kibale

The morning begins with another game drive through Queen Elizabeth National Park. This gives you another opportunity to look for lions, buffaloes, elephants, Uganda kob, waterbuck, and other wildlife before leaving the park.

After the game drive, you continue towards Kibale National Park. The journey passes through the scenic crater-lake region around Fort Portal and the Ndali-Kasenda area. These crater lakes create some of the most attractive landscapes in western Uganda. By evening, you reach Kibale, where the focus changes once again from savannah wildlife to primates.

Kibale is one of Uganda’s principal chimpanzee destinations, and chimpanzee tracking and chimpanzee habituation are among the park’s experiences.

Day 10: Chimpanzee Trekking and Bigodi Wetland

Today you enter Kibale Forest for your wild chimpanzee tracking experience. The day begins with a briefing before entering the forest with a ranger guide. Unlike the Ngamba Island experience earlier in the safari, this time you are searching for chimpanzees living in their natural forest environment.

The search can involve walking beneath the canopy while listening for calls and watching the trees and forest floor for movement. Chimpanzees are highly mobile, so the experience can change rapidly. Chimpanzee tracking begins at designated entry points, and standard chimpanzee tracking provides a maximum of one hour of viewing after the animals are located.

After the trek, the journey continues to the Bigodi Wetland, where you can search for additional primates and birds while learning about the community surrounding Kibale.

Day 11: Isunga Community and the Culture Around Kibale

Rather than immediately moving to another national park, this day slows down and explores the human landscape around Kibale. You visit Isunga Community, located near Kibale, where the experience can include nature walks, gardens, traditional activities, and community interactions.

The area provides an opportunity to see how communities living close to protected forests depend on agriculture and tourism while maintaining cultural traditions. A community experience adds something that a wildlife-only itinerary cannot provide. After several days of watching animals, you get time to meet people, understand local customs, and see another side of western Uganda.

This is also an opportunity to enjoy the countryside around Fort Portal at a more relaxed pace.

Day 12: Semuliki National Park, Sempaya Hot Springs and Amabere Caves

Today you explore the geological and cultural attractions around Fort Portal. You travel towards Semuliki National Park for a nature experience around the famous Sempaya Hot Springs. The landscape is particularly interesting because Semuliki sits within the Albertine Rift and provides a marked contrast to the high forest environments you have already visited. The hot springs are the main attraction, with the male and female springs offering a fascinating natural feature to explore.

Afterwards, you return towards Fort Portal and visit Amabere Ga Nyinamwiru Caves and Nyakasura Falls. This day is less about ticking off another major animal species and more about understanding Uganda’s geological landscapes, local traditions and natural history.

Day 13: Fort Portal to Murchison Falls National Park

Today is one of the longer travel days as you leave western Uganda and head north towards Murchison Falls National Park. The journey passes through changing landscapes, rural communities, agricultural areas and trading centres before you reach the Murchison Falls region. Murchison Falls is divided by the Victoria Nile, creating two distinct ecological zones. The northern side is particularly important for traditional savannah game viewing.

By the time you arrive, you will have moved from the forest and crater-lake environment of Fort Portal into a much more open landscape. The evening is reserved for dinner and rest before the next day’s wildlife activities.

Day 14: Murchison Falls Game Drive and Nile Boat Cruise

Wake early for a game drive in the northern sector of Murchison Falls. The open savannah provides opportunities to search for elephants, buffaloes, lions, giraffes, Uganda kob, and other wildlife. The early morning is particularly useful for game viewing because temperatures are cooler and wildlife may be more active.

After lunch and some relaxation, you board a boat on the Victoria Nile. The cruise takes you towards the base of Murchison Falls, with opportunities to observe hippos, crocodiles, elephants and waterbirds along the river. The contrast between the morning game drive and afternoon boat cruise is what makes Murchison Falls such an important part of this 21 Days Uganda Gorillas, Chimpanzees & Wildlife Safari.

Day 15: Murchison Falls to Kidepo Valley National Park

Today marks the beginning of the most remote section of the safari. You leave Murchison Falls early and travel northeast towards Kidepo Valley National Park. This is a long overland journey, and it should be treated as a travel day rather than a conventional sightseeing day.

Kidepo’s isolation is part of its attraction. The park is remote and isolated, with options for both road access and scheduled or charter flights. As you approach the Karamoja region, the landscape becomes increasingly different from the greener western parts of Uganda. You arrive at your lodge in the Kidepo area and settle in for the evening.

Day 16: Kidepo Valley Wildlife Safari

Your first full day in Kidepo is dedicated to wildlife exploration. The park’s open valleys and rugged scenery create a completely different safari environment from Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls.

Game drives can take you through the Narus Valley and other wildlife-rich areas while searching for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hartebeest, lions, leopards and other species.

Kidepo is particularly valuable for travellers looking for a less crowded wilderness experience. The park has large numbers of buffaloes and elephants, extensive birdlife, and cultural experiences. The day can be structured around morning and afternoon wildlife activities, with time at the lodge during the hottest part of the day.

Day 17: Kidepo Wildlife and Ik Cultural Experience

Your second full day in Kidepo provides more time for wildlife and culture. The itinerary can include another game drive before a cultural encounter with the  Ik community, subject to the availability and arrangements for the experience.

The Ik are one of the communities associated with the wider Kidepo region, and meeting local people provides an opportunity to understand a culture and way of life that is very different from the communities you encountered in southwestern Uganda.

UWA specifically identifies cultural encounters with the Ik and Karamojong among Kidepo’s attractions.

The day therefore combines two sides of Kidepo: its wilderness and its people.

Day 18: Kidepo Valley to Soroti

After breakfast, you leave Kidepo and begin the journey towards Soroti Town. This is another long road day, but it also provides an opportunity to see a different part of eastern and northeastern Uganda. Instead of treating the drive simply as a transfer, your guide can identify suitable stops for photographs, refreshments and brief breaks along the route.

You arrive in Soroti later in the day, check into your hotel and relax. The following morning provides an opportunity to explore one of the area’s distinctive geological landmarks.

Day 19: Soroti Rock and Transfer to Jinja

The morning begins with an excursion to Soroti Rock. The hike provides panoramic views of the surrounding area and adds a small adventure component after several days dominated by wildlife.

After the activity, you continue towards Jinja, one of Uganda’s best-known adventure destinations. The character of the safari changes once again. After gorillas, chimpanzees, golden monkeys and four major wildlife regions, Jinja introduces a more active style of travel centred around the Nile and adventure activities.

Day 20: Jinja, the Nile and Adventure

Your final full day is spent in Jinja. The town is strongly associated with the Nile and offers a variety of adventure activities.

A boat trip to the Source of the Nile can be arranged as part of the day’s programme, followed by optional activities such as quad biking, horseback riding or bungee jumping depending on your interests, availability and final package. The advantage of placing Jinja at the end of the safari is that it provides a completely different final chapter. You are no longer tracking animals through forests or searching for lions on a game drive. Instead, the focus is on the Nile, adventure, and enjoying your final day in Uganda.

Day 21: Jinja to Kampala / Entebbe and Departure

After breakfast, you begin the final transfer towards Kampala and Entebbe. Depending on your international flight schedule, the day can include a final stop for lunch or sightseeing before you continue to Entebbe International Airport.

For guests departing on an evening flight, the timing can be arranged to allow a comfortable transfer. If your international flight is earlier in the day, we strongly recommend discussing the departure logistics before finalizing the itinerary.

Your 21 Days Uganda Gorillas, Chimpanzees & Wildlife Safari ends after three weeks of exploring Uganda’s forests, mountains, savannahs, rivers, communities and remote wilderness.

The Four Great Primate Experiences on This Safari

One of the strongest features of this itinerary is that it does not treat “primates” as a single experience. You encounter them in several different settings.

Ngamba Island: Conservation and Chimpanzee Care

The safari begins with rescued chimpanzees at Ngamba Island, giving you insight into sanctuary-based conservation and animal welfare. The sanctuary currently cares for 52 rescued and orphaned chimpanzees.

Mgahinga: Golden Monkeys

Golden monkey trekking takes you into the Virunga ecosystem in search of an endangered primate that is closely associated with this mountain region.

Bwindi: Mountain Gorillas

The gorilla trek is the flagship wildlife encounter of the journey, taking you into Bwindi’s dense mountain forest.

Kibale: Wild Chimpanzees

Finally, Kibale provides the opportunity to track habituated chimpanzees in their natural forest habitat. There are both chimpanzee tracking and habituation experiences at Kibale. This sequence makes the itinerary particularly attractive to travellers whose primary interest is African primates.

Why Kidepo Makes This Safari Different

If you removed Kidepo from the itinerary, you would still have an excellent Uganda safari. But you would lose one of its most distinctive elements. Kidepo is geographically remote and ecologically different from the southwestern destinations. It is one of Uganda’s true wilderness destinations and highlights its large buffalo herds, lions, elephants, ostriches, extensive birdlife and cultural experiences.

The long journey required to reach Kidepo is therefore not simply a disadvantage. It is part of why the park feels different. For travellers who have three weeks available, adding Kidepo gives the journey considerably more geographical and ecological depth.

Is This Safari Physically Difficult?

The safari is moderately active, but not every day is physically demanding. The most physically demanding activities are likely to be gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking, and some of the forest walks. Gorilla trekking requires moderate fitness, with treks potentially lasting 2–7 hours.

The long-distance driving days are another consideration. Kidepo in particular requires substantial travel time by road. Kidepo is remote, and road access can take many hours depending on the route, while scheduled and charter flights are also possible. For guests who want to reduce the longest drives, selected sections of this itinerary can potentially be converted to domestic flights.

Best Time for This 21-Day Uganda Safari

Uganda can be visited throughout the year, but weather and trail conditions vary between destinations. For travellers combining primate trekking with savannah wildlife, the drier periods are often convenient because some roads and trails can be easier to navigate. June–August and December–February are dry-season periods that are favourable for primate tracking and savannah wildlife viewing.

However, the forest environments of Bwindi and Kibale remain green and productive during wetter periods, and rain does not automatically prevent trekking. The more important consideration for a safari this long is to plan around your gorilla permit, chimpanzee permit, and preferred travel dates, then build the rest of the route around those fixed activities.

You may want to spend more time in Bwindi, upgrade from standard gorilla trekking to the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga, add Chimpanzee Habituation in Kibale, spend an additional night in Kidepo, or replace some of the adventure activities in Jinja with cultural experiences.

The route can also be adjusted according to your arrival and departure airport. For travellers who prefer less driving, the Kidepo section can potentially be connected by air, while other domestic flight options can be considered according to the final routing and flight schedule.

Is 21 days too long for a Uganda safari?

Not if you want to experience Uganda comprehensively. The itinerary covers multiple ecosystems, primate destinations, wildlife parks, cultural experiences and adventure areas.
