10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari is a comprehensive Uganda adventure combining mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, forest primates, classic African game drives, and boat safaris across some of the country’s most rewarding national parks. Over 10 days, this journey takes you from the wildlife-rich plains of Murchison Falls to the primate forests of Kibale, through the savannahs and wetlands of Queen Elizabeth National Park and finally into the misty mountains of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for an unforgettable encounter with mountain gorillas.
Unlike a short gorilla trip that concentrates almost entirely on one forest destination, this 10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari gives you time to experience the different ecosystems that make Uganda such a diverse safari destination. You will search for wildlife on game drives, cruise along the Nile and Kazinga Channel, walk through tropical forest in search of chimpanzees, and spend a full day trekking through Bwindi in search of a habituated gorilla family.
Native Africa Tours can arrange the complete safari, including gorilla and chimpanzee permits, accommodation, private 4WD transportation, professional guiding, park activities, and the necessary transfers throughout Uganda. The itinerary can also be adjusted according to your preferred accommodation category, travel dates, starting point, and safari budget.
A Safari Built Around Uganda’s Greatest Wildlife Experiences
There is a reason Uganda is often described as a destination where primates and classic African wildlife can be experienced on the same journey. The country’s protected areas are spread across very different landscapes, from the tropical forests of Kibale and Bwindi to the open savannah of Murchison Falls, the wetlands around Queen Elizabeth and the rolling grasslands of Lake Mburo. Uganda Wildlife Authority manages these protected areas and identifies Bwindi, Kibale, Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth and Lake Mburo among the country’s major national parks.
This 10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari itinerary is designed to take advantage of that diversity.
The first part of the journey introduces you to Uganda’s large mammals and dramatic landscapes. You then move into the forest environment, where the focus changes from lions, elephants and buffaloes to chimpanzees and other primates. The journey continues south through Queen Elizabeth National Park before reaching Bwindi, where the safari reaches its most anticipated moment: mountain gorilla trekking.
The final stage provides a more relaxed wildlife experience around Lake Mburo before your return to Entebbe. That progression is what makes this 10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari more than simply a collection of famous Ugandan destinations. Each park adds something different to the journey.

The Journey:10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari
Day 1: Entebbe to Murchison Falls National Park via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Your 10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari begins at Entebbe International Airport, where you will meet your professional safari guide and begin the journey northwards towards Murchison Falls National Park.
Rather than driving directly to the park, the journey can include a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, giving you an opportunity to experience rhino tracking before continuing towards Murchison Falls. This creates an interesting introduction to Uganda’s wildlife conservation story before you even reach the national park.
The journey then continues through the countryside towards Masindi, where you can stop for lunch before proceeding towards Murchison Falls National Park. As you approach the park, the landscape gradually changes from populated countryside to a more distinctly wild environment. Depending on arrival time and the final itinerary, you can visit the top of Murchison Falls, where the Victoria Nile is forced through a narrow gorge before plunging downstream.
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest national park, and both its wildlife viewing and dramatic waterfall landscape are major attractions. The park can also be accessed by scheduled or chartered flights, although this particular itinerary is designed as a road safari. You will check into your lodge in the evening and have time to relax after the day’s journey.
Overnight: Murchison Falls National Park
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Main experiences: Road safari, optional rhino tracking and Murchison Falls
Day 2: Murchison Falls Game Drive and Nile Boat Safari
Day two is dedicated entirely to experiencing the wildlife and landscapes of Murchison Falls National Park.
An early morning game drive allows you to enter the savannah when temperatures are cooler, and many animals are more active. Your guide will search the plains and woodland for species such as elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes, warthogs and, with some luck, lions and leopards. Murchison Falls is particularly valuable in an itinerary like this because it gives you a completely different wildlife experience from the forest environments you will encounter later. Instead of looking upward into dense tropical vegetation for primates, you are scanning open grassland for large mammals.
After returning to your lodge for lunch and some rest, the afternoon takes you onto the Victoria Nile for a boat cruise towards the base of Murchison Falls. The boat safari is one of the most rewarding activities in the park because wildlife concentrates along the river. Hippos can often be seen in the water, crocodiles rest along the banks, and numerous waterbirds inhabit the shoreline. The boat also gives you a different perspective of the falls as you approach from below. Boat cruises and game drives are among Murchison Falls’ principal safari experiences.
You return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and another night in the park.
Overnight: Murchison Falls National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Main experiences: Morning game drive and Victoria Nile boat cruise
Day 3: Murchison Falls to Kibale National Park
Today the safari changes character.
After breakfast, you leave the savannah landscape of Murchison Falls and begin travelling towards western Uganda and Kibale National Park. It is a longer driving day, but it is an important transition because you are moving from one of Uganda’s major savannah ecosystems into one of its most important tropical forest environments. The route takes you through changing landscapes and rural communities, eventually reaching the Fort Portal region and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains.
Kibale is famous for its exceptional primate diversity. The park is a major primate destination and highlights the Kanyanchu Primate Walk, where visitors can encounter species including red colobus, black-and-white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys. Chimpanzees are the principal attraction.
By the time you arrive at your lodge, the atmosphere will be completely different from Murchison Falls. The open savannah has given way to dense forest, green hills and a cooler environment. You will have dinner and prepare for the following day’s chimpanzee experience.
Overnight: Kibale National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Main experience: Scenic transfer into Uganda’s primate region
Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking and the Forests of Kibale
Today is one of the defining days of your 10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari because you enter Kibale Forest in search of one of our closest living relatives: the chimpanzee. After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing before beginning the chimpanzee trek. Chimpanzee tracking is very different from a conventional game drive. You are moving through a forest environment, following signs and calls while your ranger and trackers work to locate the chimpanzee community. The experience can also reveal many other forest species along the way. Kibale’s importance extends far beyond chimpanzees. The park is home to 13 primate species, making it one of the most important primate destinations in Uganda.
After the chimpanzee experience, you return for lunch before spending the afternoon exploring the wider Kibale area. Depending on the final package, this can include a Bigodi Wetland experience, where community guides lead visitors through wetland and forest habitats with opportunities to see additional primates, birds and other wildlife.
This combination is important because the chimpanzee trek gives you the headline encounter, while the afternoon experience allows you to slow down and appreciate the wider ecosystem surrounding Kibale.
For travellers particularly interested in primates, Kibale can also be upgraded to a Chimpanzee Habituation Experience. The habituation experience allows visitors to spend an extended period with chimpanzees as researchers and trackers follow their daily activities.
Overnight: Kibale National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Main experiences: Chimpanzee trekking and optional Bigodi Wetland experience
Day 5: Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park
After breakfast, you leave Kibale and continue south towards Queen Elizabeth National Park. This is a relatively important geographical transition in the safari. Kibale represents the rainforest and primate side of Uganda, while Queen Elizabeth brings you back into a landscape dominated by savannah, lakes, wetlands and large mammals. The journey passes through the Fort Portal region, with views of western Uganda’s rolling countryside and, depending on weather conditions, spectacular views towards the Rwenzori Mountains.
On arrival in Queen Elizabeth National Park, you check into your lodge and have time to relax. If timing permits, an evening game drive can be arranged, giving you the opportunity to begin exploring the park before the following day’s main wildlife activities.
Queen Elizabeth is particularly valuable in a 10 Days gorilla primates and wildlife safari because it provides a strong contrast to both Kibale and Bwindi. Instead of spending every day focused on primates, you return to classic African wildlife viewing.
Overnight: Queen Elizabeth National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Main experience: Transfer from Kibale to Queen Elizabeth
Day 6: Queen Elizabeth National Park: Game Drive and Kazinga Channel
Wake up early for a game drive through Queen Elizabeth National Park. The park’s varied habitats support elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, hippos and numerous bird species, while predators such as lions and leopards can also be encountered. The exact wildlife sightings are naturally unpredictable, which is part of what makes a game drive different from a zoo visit. Your guide reads tracks, recent sightings, animal behaviour and the condition of different areas to decide where to concentrate the search.
After the morning game drive, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation.
In the afternoon, head to the Kazinga Channel, one of Uganda’s best-known boat safari locations. The channel connects Lake Edward and Lake George and attracts large numbers of hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds. From the boat, you can watch wildlife gathering along the shoreline while enjoying a completely different perspective from the morning game drive.
This combination of game drive + boat cruise is one of the reasons Queen Elizabeth fits so well into a longer Uganda safari.
Overnight: Queen Elizabeth National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Main experiences: Game drive and Kazinga Channel boat cruise
Day 7: Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi Through the Ishasha Sector
Today you begin moving towards the ultimate primate experience of the safari: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The route can take you through the Ishasha sector, in the southern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you have another opportunity for wildlife viewing before continuing towards Bwindi. Ishasha is particularly famous for its tree-climbing lions, although sightings are never guaranteed. You may also encounter elephants, buffaloes, antelopes and other wildlife as you travel through the sector.
Leaving Queen Elizabeth behind, the landscape gradually becomes more mountainous as you approach southwestern Uganda. Eventually the forests and hills of Bwindi come into view. Bwindi is very different from Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth. This is a high-altitude rainforest environment, with steep slopes, dense vegetation and narrow winding roads.
Your lodge is selected according to the gorilla trekking sector assigned to your permit. Bwindi’s main gorilla sectors include Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, and choosing accommodation close to your trekking point is important because it reduces unnecessary travel on the morning of the trek.
You will have dinner and prepare for the most anticipated day of the safari.
Overnight: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Main experiences: Ishasha wildlife viewing and scenic journey to Bwindi
Day 8: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
This is the day many travellers have been waiting for. After an early breakfast, you transfer to the appropriate gorilla trekking briefing point. Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, with treks potentially lasting several hours depending on the location of the gorilla family.
The morning begins with a briefing from the park authorities. You are then assigned to a gorilla family and begin walking into the forest with trained ranger guides. The trek may be relatively short or may require several hours of hiking. There is no fixed distance because gorillas move through the forest and their location can change from one day to the next.
As you move deeper into Bwindi, the experience becomes increasingly immersive. You are no longer simply travelling between destinations; you are walking through the natural habitat of one of the world’s most remarkable great apes. When you locate the gorilla family, you will have your designated viewing time to observe them from the permitted distance under the guidance of the rangers. The experience can be deeply moving because the animals are not performing for visitors. You may watch adults feeding, juveniles playing, mothers caring for young ones, or the dominant silverback resting nearby.
After the encounter, you trek back out of the forest and return to your lodge.
The afternoon is deliberately left flexible. After a demanding forest trek, many travellers prefer to rest, enjoy the lodge surroundings, or take a gentle community experience rather than immediately beginning another major activity.
Overnight: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Main experience: Mountain gorilla trekking
Day 9: Bwindi to Lake Mburo National Park
After breakfast, you leave the mountains of Bwindi and begin the journey towards Lake Mburo National Park. The landscape gradually changes again as you leave the dense forests and enter the rolling countryside of southwestern Uganda. Lake Mburo provides a very different final wildlife experience. The park as a compact but biologically diverse savannah destination, with wetlands, lakes, woodland and grassland supporting species such as zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, hippo and a wide range of birds.
One of Lake Mburo’s particular advantages is that it offers wildlife experiences that differ from the larger savannah parks. UWA identifies the park as one of Uganda’s best places to see zebra and notes that it is home to Uganda’s only population of impala. Depending on your arrival time, you can enjoy an evening game drive or another activity around the park.
After the intensity of gorilla trekking, this provides a more relaxed final wildlife chapter.
Overnight: Lake Mburo National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Main experience: Transfer to Lake Mburo and optional evening wildlife viewing
Day 10: Lake Mburo Wildlife Experience and Return to Entebbe
Your final morning begins with a game drive through Lake Mburo National Park. The park’s relatively open landscape makes it possible to search for zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, waterbuck and other wildlife. Depending on the season and location, you may also encounter giraffes and a variety of birds.
For travellers who prefer a more active final morning, Lake Mburo also offers alternative ways to experience its landscape. The park offers game drives, walking, boat excursions, mountain biking and horseback experiences among the park’s possible activities.
After the morning activity, you leave the park and begin your journey towards Entebbe. A stop at the Equator can be incorporated into the return journey, giving you a final opportunity for photographs and a short break before continuing towards Entebbe.
Your 10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari ends with a transfer to Entebbe International Airport or your preferred accommodation.
If your international flight is departing the same day, we recommend allowing sufficient time between the safari’s estimated arrival in Entebbe and your flight departure.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Main experiences: Lake Mburo game drive, Equator stop and transfer to Entebbe
Why This 10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari Is Different
The strength of this safari is the variety of wildlife experiences within one journey. Murchison Falls introduces you to Uganda’s large mammals and the dramatic Nile landscape. Kibale changes the focus to chimpanzees and forest primates. Queen Elizabeth brings back the open savannah and large mammals, while Bwindi provides the rare opportunity to trek through montane rainforest in search of mountain gorillas. Lake Mburo then closes the trip with a smaller, quieter savannah experience.
You therefore do not spend ten days repeating the same type of activity. One morning you might be watching elephants from a safari vehicle. The next day you are listening for chimpanzee calls in the forest. Later in the journey, you are travelling through Bwindi’s steep rainforest while searching for gorillas. That diversity is the central reason to choose a 10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari rather than a much shorter gorilla-only package.
The Primate Experiences
Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi
The gorilla trek is the emotional centrepiece of the safari. It is physically active, unpredictable and completely different from watching wildlife from a vehicle. The experience also requires careful planning because your permit determines your trekking date and sector. We therefore recommend securing the gorilla permit before finalizing the accommodation and detailed routing.
Chimpanzees in Kibale
Kibale complements the gorilla experience beautifully. While gorillas spend much of their time on the ground, chimpanzees are highly active forest primates that can move through the canopy and across the forest floor. Their social behaviour, vocal communication and constant movement make chimpanzee tracking a completely different wildlife encounter. Kibale’s documented primate diversity is one of the strongest reasons it belongs in a Uganda gorilla and chimpanzee safari. There are 13 primate species in the park.
The Wildlife Experiences
Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison provides the classic safari beginning to the journey, with open landscapes, large mammals and the Nile running through the park. The combination of a game drive and boat cruise means you experience the park from both land and water.
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Queen Elizabeth adds another major wildlife environment to the itinerary. The Kazinga Channel boat cruise is especially valuable because it allows close observation of hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds while complementing the land-based game drives.
Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo is smaller than Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth, but that is precisely part of its appeal. Its landscape supports zebra, impala, eland, buffalo and other wildlife, while its proximity to Kampala and Entebbe makes it a practical final stop before departure.
Are 10 Days Enough for a Uganda Gorilla, Primate and Wildlife Safari?
Yes. Ten days provides enough time to combine the major experiences without turning the trip into an extremely rushed gorilla-and-wildlife circuit. The important point is that this is still an active safari. Several days involve long road transfers because Uganda’s major wildlife destinations are geographically spread out.
However, the advantage of ten days is that the longer journeys are balanced with proper stays in the parks. You are not simply arriving at a destination, sleeping, and immediately leaving again. You get meaningful time for game drives, boat cruises, chimpanzee tracking and gorilla trekking. Travellers who have more time can extend the itinerary with destinations such as Lake Bunyonyi, Semuliki, Mgahinga or additional days in Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi.
How Difficult Is This Safari?
The safari combines vehicle-based wildlife viewing with two physically active forest experiences.
Gorilla trekking is generally the more demanding of the two because Bwindi’s terrain can be steep, muddy, and uneven. Trek duration varies according to where the gorilla family is located.
Chimpanzee trekking also involves walking through forest terrain, although the experience is different and the duration can vary.
You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking on uneven ground for several hours. Travellers who have mobility concerns should tell us before booking so that we can recommend an appropriate trekking sector, lodge and itinerary.
Best Time for This Uganda Safari
A 10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari can be undertaken throughout the year, but the conditions change with the seasons.
The drier periods are generally attractive for travellers who want easier road conditions and comfortable game viewing. The wetter months can bring muddy forest trails, but they also produce lush landscapes and can offer good conditions for certain primate experiences.
Importantly, gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking are not seasonal activities that simply stop during rainy months. Chimpanzee tracking and habituation take place throughout the year. For a safari combining gorillas, chimpanzees, and wildlife, the best month therefore depends on your priorities rather than one universally perfect season.
What to Pack for the 10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari
Pack for several different environments. You will need comfortable safari clothing for game drives, warmer layers for the cooler highland areas around Bwindi, sturdy hiking shoes for forest trekking, and waterproof protection for unpredictable rain. A useful packing list includes lightweight long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, a waterproof jacket, hiking shoes, gardening gloves for the gorilla trek, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, binoculars, a small daypack and a reusable water bottle.
For photography, bring spare batteries and sufficient memory cards. Forest environments can be darker than expected, while wildlife viewing can involve long periods of waiting for the right moment.
Accommodation on Your Safari
Accommodation is selected according to the route, your preferred standard, and the location of each activity. For a safari of this length, location matters as much as luxury.
At Bwindi, for example, staying near your trekking sector is particularly important. A beautiful lodge several hours from your gorilla briefing point may be less convenient than a slightly simpler property located close to the trailhead. The same principle applies throughout the safari. We select lodges that provide a practical balance between comfort, location, service and overall safari budget. You can choose from budget, mid-range or luxury accommodation, and we can also mix categories where appropriate.
What’s Included in the 10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari?
The exact inclusions depend on your final quotation and accommodation category, but a complete package can include your private 4WD safari vehicle, professional English-speaking driver-guide, accommodation, meals according to the agreed meal plan, gorilla trekking permit, chimpanzee trekking permit, national park activities, boat cruises included in the itinerary, game drives and planned transfers. We can also arrange airport transfers and additional activities where requested.
Because safari prices vary according to lodge category, group size and travel dates, Native Africa Tours provides a personalized quotation rather than presenting one artificial price that applies to every traveller.
What’s Not Included?
International flights, Uganda visa fees, travel insurance, personal expenses, alcoholic drinks, laundry, gratuities, optional activities and other services not specifically included in the final itinerary are normally excluded. Any activity added after the booking has been confirmed may also attract an additional charge. Your final quotation will clearly separate included and excluded services before you make the booking.
Can This 10-Day Safari Be Customized?
Yes. A major advantage of booking a private 10 Days Gorilla Primates & Wildlife Safari is that the itinerary does not have to be treated as a rigid package. For example, travellers who are particularly interested in gorillas can add extra time in Bwindi or upgrade to the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga.
Travellers who are especially interested in chimpanzees can consider adding the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale. Chimpanzee habituation is available in Kibale and involves an extended day with chimpanzees. Wildlife enthusiasts may prefer an additional night in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls, while travellers interested in landscapes and relaxation may choose to add Lake Bunyonyi.
This flexibility is one of the strongest advantages of arranging the safari privately.
Why Book This Safari With Native Africa Tours?
A multi-destination Uganda safari requires more than simply booking accommodation in five national parks. The order of the destinations matters. Gorilla permits need to correspond with your trekking date and sector. Chimpanzee permits need to fit the itinerary. Driving times need to be realistic, and accommodation should be positioned according to the following day’s activity.
Native Africa Tours is a Uganda-based safari operator specializing in gorilla trekking, primate experiences, and wildlife safaris. We can coordinate the safari from your arrival at Entebbe through the final transfer back to the airport. The result is a journey designed around your actual travel dates, preferred accommodation and safari priorities, rather than simply combining destinations on a map.
