2 Days Nyiragongo Volcano Trek
Welcome to the best 2 Days Nyiragongo Volcano Trek. The breathtaking Mount Nyiragongo is one of the 8 Virunga Volcanoes and so far the most active with the World’s largest Lava Lake. The experience of climbing and encountering a wide range of animals along the way is one you can’t describe with words. This active Volcano towers at 3470 meters above Goma Town and is known to be one of the most eruptive Volcanoes its last activity was in May 2021 when hot Lava stopped short of the Town’s limits but killed more than 30 people.
Climbing it is very safe but isn’t for the faint-hearted but those that take it on always leave open-mouthed. Our Mount Nyiragongo hiking package is 2 days with overnight at the summit.
Day 1: Arrival in Goma and hike to the Nyiragongo summit
Visitors arrive on this day in the Town of Goma and continue to the Grande Barriere border crossing by half past six in the morning for check-in at the Virunga Tourism Office. Get your hiking permits and this should be complete by 8:00 am as you drive to the base of Mount Nyiragongo for the start of the adventure.
Present the valid Mount Nyiragongo hiking permit at the briefing point (Kibati Ranger Post) after going through the mandatory briefing on the activity. Start ascending the mountain by 10:00 am with occasional stops along the way for photography, wildlife spotting, and bird watching, and by 5:00 pm you will be at the summit marked by the World’s largest Lava Lake. Enjoy your minutes of photography as well as picnics before continuing to the summit shelters for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Descent back to Kibati Ranger Post and drive back to Goma Town
A wonderful night is spent at the crater, and on this morning have breakfast before you start descending to the bottom of Mount Nyiragongo by 6:00 am. In 3-4 hours you will be at the base (depending on weather conditions) after which join your driver guide for a transfer to the Town of Goma. The drop-off point for our Mount Nyiragongo hike is Grande Barriere.
