5 Days Gorilla Trekking & Wildlife Tour in Rwanda

Overview

Take part in this 5 Days Gorilla Trekking & Wildlife safari in Rwanda where you will visit the volcanoes national park known for gorillas and Akagera national park for wildlife viewing. These two destinations will reward you with top-notch wilderness experiences through undertaking gorilla trekking, game drives and boat cruise encounters. There is a lot to discover while carrying out such experiences and among others are gorillas, lions, zebras, warthogs, buffaloes, Masai giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, birds like the shoebill stork, vultures and eagles among others.

Also, you will take a short city tour in Kigali on your last day, to visit historical site like the presidential Palace museum, local markets, Kigali genocide memorial grounds and Richard Kandt museum.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Welcome to the land of a thousand hills! Your dedicated tour driver / guide will pick you from the airport and then transfer straight to Volcanoes national park in Northern Province. This park is one of the conservation areas where you can find last refuge of endangered mountain gorillas. It’s known to be a historical destination where habituation of gorilla started with Dian Fossey who was a female primatologist and dedicated her life to conserving, protecting and creating awareness about mountain gorillas in Rwanda, Uganda and D.R. Congo.

She also founded a research center in 1980 located in the midst of two misty volcanic mountains - Bisoke and Karisimbi, hence Karisoke research center. You will arrive at the lodge in the evening for dinner and relax for the rest of the day.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking experience

This is the long-awaited day, as you trek the remaining endangered mountain gorillas on this day after breakfast at the lodge and briefing at the park offices. The park guide will help you easily trek the location of mountain gorillas within 1 to 7 hours.

Other than the mountain gorillas, you will meet other park attractions including unique bird species, lush vegetation and small primates animals like red-tailed monkeys, colobus monkeys and Vervet monkeys.

The adventure takes about 1 to 7 hours but an hour will be included while in the presence of these beautiful apes. You will head back to the lodge after the activity and this will be the end of the day.

Day 3: Transfer to Akagera National Park

In the morning, have breakfast and take a drive to Akagera national park. This park is the only savannah conservation area in Rwanda which hosts big 5 mammals and this will be discovered during the next day game drive and boat cruise.

Akagera national park gets its name from Akagera River that runs on the border of Tanzania and Rwanda, the park is characterized by swampy vegetation, woodland, mountains and savannahs where wildlife keep roaming around the park. Arrive and head to the lodge booked.

Day 4: Game drive and boat cruise in Akagera National Park

Begin the day with a 2 hours’ game drive in the savannah plains that will create memorable experiences where you will encounter different animals like zebras, lions, Masai giraffes, warthogs among others. There are also different bird species that you can enjoy such as the shoebill stork, vultures, eagles among others but also the beautiful scenery of endless plains.

Head out for another exciting activity of boat cruise where you will be able to explore water dwellers like the crocodiles, hippos among others. This will also last for 2 hours and you will head out to the lodge for your dinner and nap.

Day 5: Transfer to Kigali Airport

Leave your accommodation and head to Kigali after breakfast and this will be accompanied by a short city tour where you will visit main attractions like the Kigali genocide memorial grounds, presidential Palace and the local markets.

Head out to the airport in Kigali to catch up with your scheduled flight back home and this will be the end of this 5 days gorilla trekking and wildlife safari in Rwanda.
