Bukavu is the main capital of the Kivu province. It is located on the eastern side of the Democratic Republic of Congo, at the extreme southwestern edge of Lake Kivu, and west of the Cyangungu border of Rwanda. In the past, Bukavu was part of the historical area of the Bushi kingdom, which was part of the south Kivu ethnic group. With the arrival of the Arabs and Europeans, the kingdom came to an end.
