The park has over 50 gorilla families with 24 families habituated and available for trekking daily.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of the smallest national parks in Uganda with over 33.9 square kilometers of land mass. It harbors over 100 mountain gorillas making it the second gorilla destination in the country. It was established in 1991 in the southwestern region on the border with Rwanda. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has only one gorilla family called Nyakagezi. Hence there are only eight gorilla trekking permits available daily.

Accessing Uganda’s gorilla destinations from Kigali Rwanda

Accessibility of the gorilla destinations in Uganda from Kigali Rwanda is only by road. This is a 2-3 hour drive depending on the particular destination. Kigali is approximately 2 hours from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Accessing Bwindi can be through the Gatuna border point to Kabale. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can be accessed from Kigali through the Chanika border taking about 3 hours.
