Ruhondeza Silverback: Ruhondeza silverback was a leader of the Mubare group and was considered to be the oldest gorilla in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwestern Uganda. Additionally, Bwindi is the largest protected area for mountain gorillas in the world. Ruhondeza was the first silverback to be habituated in Uganda. He led over 17 members during his time of leadership. History has it that Ruhondeza was a peaceful silverback in the jungle. Ruhondeza is a local Rukiga word that means “sleepy”, as he was fond of sleeping most of the time. He was also known to be calm and mild-mannered. Ruhondeza silverback was about 28 to 32 years old by the time the Mubare family was habituated. The Mubare family was reduced to 6 members as other members broke off to form other families like Habinyanja. As of today, the Habinyanja gorilla family is under the leadership of Mwirima. Later on, the remaining royal silverback Kanyonyi – Ruhondeza’s biological son continues to protect the remaining members of the family.
In March 2012, Ruhondeza was beaten by a wild group of mountain gorillas, leading to his submission. He was forced to leave to a private place. Uganda Wildlife Authority agreed with the local community to let the Ruhondeza silverback stay in the community in Rubona Village. Later, in June 2012, Ruhondeza silverback died. He was buried near the park headquarters, and his monument was erected on his grave. He is believed to have died at the age of 50.
