Ruhondeza Silverback: Ruhondeza silverback was a leader of the Mubare group and was considered to be the oldest gorilla in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwestern Uganda. Additionally, Bwindi is the largest protected area for mountain gorillas in the world. Ruhondeza was the first silverback to be habituated in Uganda. He led over 17 members during his time of leadership. More so, Ruhondeza was first seen by the tourists during their gorilla trekking tour in 1993.
History has it that Ruhondeza was a peaceful silverback in the jungle. Ruhondeza is a local Rukiga word that means “sleepy”, as he was fond of sleeping most of the time. He was also known to be calm and mild-mannered. Ruhondeza silverback was about 28 to 32 years old by the time the Mubare family was habituated. The Mubare family was reduced to 6 members as other members broke off to form other families like Habinyanja. As of today, the Habinyanja gorilla family is under the leadership of Mwirima. Later on, the remaining royal silverback Kanyonyi – Ruhondeza’s biological son continues to protect the remaining members of the family.
In March 2012, Ruhondeza was beaten by a wild group of mountain gorillas, leading to his submission. He was forced to leave to a private place. Uganda Wildlife Authority agreed with the local community to let the Ruhondeza silverback stay in the community in Rubona Village. Later, in June 2012, Ruhondeza silverback died. He was buried near the park headquarters, and his monument was erected on his grave. He is believed to have died at the age of 50. How much is a permit to visit Ruhondeza?
Although the Ruhondeza silverback is long gone, his legacy remains intact in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. His family and grandchildren still exist in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. If you are interested in visiting gorillas in Uganda, you must buy a gorilla permit. A gorilla permit is one of the essential requirements to see mountain gorillas in the jungle. It is a legal document issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority but only sold to tour operators in Uganda.
One gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs 800 USD for foreign nonresidents, 700 USD for foreign residents, and 500 USD for the rest of Africa. On the other hand, Ugandans can get the permit at Ugx 300,000.
For tourists interested in seeing gorillas for quite a long time they should opt for a gorilla habituation experience. This activity is only done in the Rushaga sector of the park. A gorilla habituation permit for foreign nonresidents costs USD 1500. Foreign residents buy the same permit at USD 800. Lastly, members of the East African Community buy permits at Ugx 750,000.
How many gorilla permits are available in Uganda?
Gorilla permits in Uganda are limited in number for conservation purposes. Each gorilla family can only be visited by a group of 8 people per day. Overall, Uganda has over 26 habituated gorilla families. These live in both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. This implies that every day, Uganda can issue about 168 gorilla permits to tourists. This is why we advise our customers to reserve their permits ahead of time (at least 3 months before their trip) to avoid last-minute inconveniences.
