4 Days Akagera and Congo Lowland Gorilla Safari: We invite you to experience the 4 days Akagera and Congo lowland gorilla safari, which presents an exhilarating combination of traditional African wildlife and primate experiences. This safari will take you to Rwanda’s Akagera National Park, where you can observe the Big Five, and to Kahuzi-Biega National Park in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, home to the endangered lowland gorillas. During this adventure, you will have the opportunity to witness the diverse savannah wildlife, including lions, leopards, buffaloes, and rhinos, as well as explore the verdant forests of Kahuzi-Biega National Park to see the lowland gorillas up close.

Safari Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Bukavu.
  • Day 2: Gorilla trekking.
  • Day 3: Transfer to Akagera National Park.
  • Day 4: Morning game drive and return to Kigali.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Bukavu

On the first day of the 4 days Akagera and Congo lowland gorilla safari, you will be greeted by your guide upon your arrival at the airport. You will then be taken on a city tour of Kigali, where you will visit significant sites such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Belgian Monument, among others. Following the city tour, you will proceed to Bukavu via the Ruzizi border. Upon reaching the border, you will complete the necessary immigration procedures before continuing to Bukavu. Once in Bukavu, you will be taken to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi Biega National Park

Your day will begin with breakfast, followed by a transfer to Kahuzi-Biega National Park, home to the lowland gorillas. The journey from Bukavu to the park will take approximately one hour.  Upon your arrival, you will participate in an orientation session regarding gorilla trekking, where you will be informed about the essential guidelines and protocols for the activity. Following the orientation, you will embark on the trekking adventure, which may last between 2 to 7 hours. Once you encounter the gorillas, you will have one hour to observe them from a distance of 7 meters within their natural habitat. After the trekking experience, you will return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Transfer to Akagera National Park 

On the penultimate day, you will start with an early breakfast before transferring to Akagera National Park. This journey will involve crossing the Ruzizi border. At the border, you will check in at the migration office before continuing your transfer to Akagera National Park, which will take approximately 5 to 6 hours. Upon arrival, you will enjoy an evening game drive in the park, where you may encounter a variety of wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and more. You will then return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Morning game drive and Transfer to Kigali 

Day 4 will commence with an early breakfast, followed by a transfer into the park for a morning game drive to observe the diverse wildlife. After the game drive, you will enjoy a picnic breakfast at a scenic spot within the park.  Subsequently, you will transfer to Lake Ihema for a boat cruise. Upon your arrival at the lake, you will embark on the boat cruise experience. 

During the boat cruise, you will encounter several wildlife like crocodiles, buffaloes, hippos, monitor lizards, and many others. Later on, you will proceed to Kigali. Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be transferred to the airport for your outbound flights. This will mark the end of your 4 Days Akagera and Congo Lowland Gorilla Safari.
