11 days Uganda birding and Gorilla Safari

Welcome to your 11 days Uganda birding and gorilla safari an adventure that will take you to the deep treasures of the country and the territories of some of the rare bird species. Uganda is home to over 1,000 bird species that are categorized among the resident, migratory, and Rift Valley endemic birds. You will also encounter the endangered mountain gorillas that are over half of their entire world population. Other than the birds and gorillas, you will also spot some other wildlife species and primate species. Now that you have an idea of what to expect, let us dive into the details of your itinerary.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Mabamba Wetland

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, our driver guide will pick you up and brief you about your 11 days Uganda birding and gorilla safari. He will then transfer you to the Mabamba wetland for a birding experience and lunch will be en route. You will have exclusive scenes of some rare species of birds. You will encounter birds like shoebill stork, lesser jacana, orange weaver, black crake, Goliath heron, papyrus Gonolek, black egret, and black-faced Rufous warbler among others. You will thereafter be transferred to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

In the morning you will have breakfast and then be transferred to Lake Mburo National Park by our driver. You will have a brief stopover at Kayabwe at the equator for a moment and lunch will be en route. You will arrive at your lodge in Lake Mburo National Park by evening just in time for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Game drive and Guided nature walk

The following morning will be an adventurous one as you will enjoy epic scenes of the wildlife on a game drive immediately after your breakfast. You will encounter animals like buffaloes, zebras, antelopes, and impalas among others. You then head to your lodge for your lunch. In the afternoon, you will take on a guided nature walk in the park. This walk will introduce you to some savannah bird species of Lake Mburo. Some of these bird species include pied-faced barbet, pied kingfisher, speckled mousebird, African wattled lapwing, and Malachite kingfisher among others. After your walk, you will head back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Immediately after your breakfast, you will embark on the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. You will have a stopover at Igongo Cultural Center and take a brief tour of the cultural museum and lunch will be en route. This museum consists of a collection of crafts, artifacts, and exhibits of the history of the Ankole kingdom and its kings. You will then continue with your journey to Bwindi and by evening you will be in the park on time for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Gorilla trekking and Batwa Community Tour

Our driver will in the morning after your breakfast pick you up and drive you to the park offices. From here you will receive a pre-trekking briefing about the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. A guide will then group you in a group of eight people and head out to the forests for gorilla trekking. You will have a magical hour with the mountains in their natural habitat after their allocation. After your lunch in the afternoon, you may take on an optional community tour. This tour will introduce you to the Batwa pygmies who are considered the forest keepers as they lived in the park before it was gazette. This activity will take you until evening for your dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 6: Bird watching in Bwindi 

You will have breakfast and after that, you head to the park for a bird-watching experience. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to over 350 bird species and these can be spotted across the different eco-zones in the park. Bwindi is a birder's paradise as birders from all over the world flock to the park for a chance to spot some rare bird species. You will be served your packed lunch amidst your activity. Some of the bird species in Bwindi include the following black bee-eater, regal sunbird, mountain oriole, Ruwenzori nightjar, bush shrike, handsome spurfowl, red-faced woodland warbler, strange weaver, and blue-headed sunbird among others. Bird watching is an activity that takes the whole day since the bird species are scattered in different sectors of the park. In the evening you will drive back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

You will be transferred to Queen Elizabeth National Park in the morning immediately after your breakfast. On your journey to the park, you will have stopovers at the tea plantations and tour the local tea factory. You will view how tea beverages are manufactured and lunch will be en route. You will arrive in the evening just in time for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Game drive and boat cruise

The following morning you will embark on a game drive in the park after your delicious breakfast. While on your game drive, you will come across different wildlife species like buffaloes, elephants, warthogs, lions, and leopards among others. You will also view some of the savannah bird species like collared pratincole, swamp flycatcher, palm-nut vulture, shoebill, and Pel’s fishing owl among others.

Day 9: Transfer to Kibale National Park and Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary tour

After your breakfast, our driver will pick you up and transfer you to Kibale National Park. This journey takes about an hour and 30 minutes and you will enjoy artistic scenes of the tea plantations. You will arrive at the park and after checking into your lodge. After your lunch, you will head out for a tour of the Bigodi wetland sanctuary. Bigodi Wetland is a birder's paradise as it harbors over 138 bird species. These bird species include black-crowned waxbill, yellow-spotted barbet, yellow-billed barbet, black and white shrike-flycatcher, western Nectar, white-spotted fluff tail, and black bishop among others. Dinner will be served in the evening when you are back at your lodge and overnight.

Day 10: Transfer to Semuliki National Park for birding

The following morning you will be transferred to Semuliki National Park by our driver immediately after your breakfast. Semuliki is an important birding area as over 435 bird species call the park their home. With the help of an experienced birding guide, they are sure to view some of the rare bird species in the park. Birding in the park often takes the entire day and lunch is usually served during the activity. There are several bird species in the park and some of these birds include the following the 35 Guinea-Congo forest biome bird species, red thighed sparrow hawk, Haartlaub’s duck, chestnut flaned goshawk, and many others. In the evening you will head to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 11: Transfer back to Kampala – Departure

The last day of your 11 days Uganda birding and gorilla safari will begin with a delicious breakfast. After checking out of your lodge, you hit the road back to Kampala for your departure. You will have lunch en route as you observe some amazing green scenes of the tea plantations. By evening you will be already in Entebbe for your departure back home.
