1 Day Mabamba Swamp Shoebill Safari

Mabamba swamp is an extensive wetland on the shores of Lake Victoria that has built a name for being home to the elusive shoebill stork. There are four nations where you can currently spot the shoebill stork and that is Uganda, Southern Sudan, Rwanda, and Zambia however the chances of spotting it at Mabamba swamp are still the highest among all the above-mentioned countries.

There are two options for accessing Mabamba swamp, especially for travelers in Entebbe and that is by road which takes about 2 hours, and by boat trip as well a journey that will take about an hour.

Day 1: Explore Mabamba Swamp - Departure

You will wake up as early as 6:30 am and have breakfast as your safari guide waits for you. Immediately after your mouth-watering meal, you will embark on your journey to the swamp through the dirt roads of the Kampala Metropolitan area.

Upon arrival at the Mabamba Docking site, a local canoe engine boat and a local site guide will be ready to host you and brief you on what to expect on your birding trip. The guides are seasoned site birders who are well-versed in the best spots to see the shoebill stork. While on the boat, the Mabamba site guide will help you to spot an extensive number of water birds like the African Jacana, Great Cormorant, African Fish Eagle, Grey-headed gulls, and Common Squacco Heron among others

The boat takes a maximum of 3 people and goes for about 3 hours or more depending on your luck of sighting the Shoebill stork. Kindly note that full-day Mabamba birding trips can also be organized upon request through our experienced Uganda safari tour consultants.

After your successful sighting and Boat trip on Mabamba swamp, you will bid farewell to your day’s guide as we embark on our journey back to Entebbe or Kampala and that will mark the end of our day’s Uganda birding trip.
