Mount. Bisoke

Mount. Bisoke is accessible from Rwanda. It’s also known as Mountain “Visoke.” While in Rwanda, don’t fail to visit this volcano. It’s at an elevation of 12,175 feet and shares the border of Rwanda and D.R Congo, although Rwanda has the mountain’s greatest part. Because of the ecosystem surrounding it, the mountain sits in Volcanoes National Park and Virunga National Park. Mountain Bisoke is still an active volcano making it unique from many of its sister volcanoes. Its last registered eruption happened in 1957. Mount. Bisoke has two lakes, a crater lake at the top, and then Lake Ngezi on the mountain slopes. Bisoke has the biggest crater lake among the Virunga ranges.

Bisoke mountain slopes are inhabited by mountain gorillas, which are classified as endangered. Mountain gorillas are the highest regarded tourist attractions in Rwanda. Bamboo forests on the slopes of Bisoke have been supportive to the breeding of mountain gorillas, and also acts as their feeding grounds.

Climbing Mount. Bisoke is interesting majorly because of mountain gorillas along the slopes. The hike is therefore a combination with mountain gorilla tracking. Bisoke hike can take up to 6 hours to reach the summit. It’s not complicated to hike Bisoke like other Virunga volcanoes since it’s not so stiff.

Trekkers need to be mentally and physically prepared because the experience is new to most visitors. Apart from mountain gorillas, there are hundreds of bird species, lush flora and monkey species. The cost of hiking this mountain is $75 per person.

When to hike Mount. Bisoke?

Dry seasons present the best time. This is the season between December and February, as well as July to September. They present best seasons to visit this mountain because rainfall will make the trails slippery to climb.
