Our Mikeno Mist package is a 4-day one of a kind Virunga National Park package that involves undertaking a single gorilla trek as well as the Mount Nyiragongo hike. To make this safari phenomenal, we include two nights in one of the most classic accommodation facilities (Kibumba Tented Camp) and one night on Nyiragongo summit shelters. This short trip begins and ends at Goma Town with either pick-up or drop-off at Grande Barriere Border Crossing.

Situated in the Eastern side of Democratic Republic of Congo, Virunga National Park is haven to about 250 mountain gorillas. Treks are conducted within one of the 8 habituated gorilla families and given the fact that it protects the active Mount Nyiragongo, adventure seekers are offered the opportunity of climbing to the World’s largest Lava Lake.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Grande Barriere Border Crossing

This is the day we reach Grande Barriere Border crossing for check-in that begins by 11:30am and is expected to last about an hour. It is here that the gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo hiking permits are secured and will be required at the briefing point before each of the activities begins. Travellers are then transferred to the Gikeri Ranger Post for a meeting with your private guide before retiring for dinner and overnight at Kibumba Tented Camp.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking from Kibati Ranger Post

After a hearty breakfast, participants walk down or get driven to meet ICCN Park Rangers for the mandatory briefing prior to starting the gorilla trek. Guided treks through the jungles take one to two and a half hours, depending on the weather condition, location and difficulty of the Park terrain. After relishing the one hour of photography and watching the Great Apes go about their daily routines, get back to the Tented Camp for a delicious hot lunch. This is followed by unwinding at the Camp, guided nature walks or bird watching.

Day 3: The phenomenal Nyiragongo Mountain hike from Kibati Ranger Post

Start this wonderful day with a delicious breakfast served at the Tented Camp then get transferred to the starting point for Mount Nyiragongo hikes-Kibati Ranger Post. On getting there, visitors are taken through the guidelines of hiking and expectations in the 30-45 minutes’ briefing. At this point, trekkers interested in hiring porters do so then start the hike by 8:00am. While the attractions to be spotted along the way aren’t predictable, there are high chances of seeing forest elephants, Rwenzori Turaco, chameleons, forest buffaloes and duikers. For this adventure, a total of 4-6 hours should be expected with breathtaking views of Mount Nyamuragira-another active Volcano and the reddish Lava on Mount Nyiragongo summit. Overnight Camping and dinner on the stunning summit.

Day 4: Leave the Nyiragongo summit for Kibati Ranger Post

Descent from the Nyiragongo summit begins by 6:00am after a hearty breakfast and in 3-4 hours you will be at Kibati Ranger Post. Tip your porter and Ranger guides and hop into the safari vehicle for a drive back to Goma Town. Our drop-off point is Grande Barriere Border Crossing and this marks the end of our 4 days in Virunga National Park.
